Magdalena (or how to kill the grey whale)

2008-10-14

It is not a humongous stone nor the Mexican version of Nessie, but the astonishing gray whale visiting Magdalena bay, where I arrived to see them mate and give birth. No perversions, of course.

Naturally, the government is already drawing residential and tourist resorts to improve the quality of the service provided to visitors, affecting in this way the natural ecosystem of those who have been visiting this shore for centuries.

The whales travel from Alaska to Magdalena Bay due to the weather and the water conditions. For sure, they also take the trip because the strenuous coastal development and the shipping have them sick tired in some seasons.

The whales appear far away in the distance. With the binoculars I can see how they slowly move out of the water until suddenly… foum! splash! Right behind us, really close, they are playing a joke on us. Little by little they set themselves at ease until they let us take pics and it is almost like if they where saying hello each time they emerge from the water, in vertical line, always having a quick look of the surroundings.

I think that buying a condo here would be like purchasing an eternal ticket to Sea World. Provided, of course, that so many buildings do not result counterproductive and turn “the arrival of the gray whales” show into the “see how the last gray whales run away” show.
