Bay of los Angeles (or how to be a whale shark without dying in the attempt)

2008-10-23

I continued my trip in the Bay of los Angeles, looking for more sea fauna; but, I found an environmental problem. In fact, more than one. They are like mosquitoes distracting you, hindering your own thoughts.

I traded the gray whale for a whale shark, so as to forget it.  Nah! I would never forget it, but I couldn’t leave myself without admiring other of the great wonders of the Californian fauna. Bay of los Angeles is in the state of Baja California; however, you can not see any changes in the landscape when crossing from one state to the other.

What’s more: there are also mountains of wastes dumped at the side of the towns and cities. Before arriving Bay of los Angeles, to see the whale shark, you have to witness a stack of wastes that looks like a tribute to Dali (I already took pics of them – I will be a rich man!). Then, the landscape of houses that instead of bathroom have a septic tank or latrines is just the same as the one of the pictures of the Great Depression. Finally, the fishermen say that there are sunken shrimp boats, which pollute the bottom of the bay and create urban legend images in one’s mind.

It is true. There are some unbelievable and surrealistic things that only happen in Mexico: On the beach, on my way to meeting the whale shark, I found a turtle trapped in a net; once in the sea, a Jet Ski crashed with a shark (??). The shark was swimming, doing what sharks do, when… frssmospppscchhttt! The Jet Ski ran over it. Well, I guess every business has its own risks.

In Bay of los Angeles there are no more than 300 inhabitants, which makes them easy to know each other and to organize themselves to have less dead animals and more protected areas. The harmless whale shark – it must be difficult to be harmless with such a name! -, and the great variety of turtles and sea fauna should be happy because of that; although after a while they exchange this peace for businesses.
